Community Day Report, Winners

Community counts!

The Pleasant Hills Arboretum Board would like to thank all of those who stopped and visited our booth on Community Day, August, 9, 2014.

Thanks to Sam Sinderson for supplying the table for the booth, Ann Talarek for supplying the chairs, Pam Ferkett and Bob Mulvihill for helping to supply the table. Additional thanks goes to Eileen Bourgeois for coordinating the organization of the booth and helping with the distribution of the Pleasant Hills Arboretum pencils, as well as the "Common Trees of Pennsylvania" booklets courtesy of Bill Kortz, State Representative. Thank you so much to Dick Till and Davey Tree Company for donating the beautiful spreading Juniper plant for our no money raffle prize to the community.

At our booth this year we had a stump ring counting contest that was a lot of fun. Three tree stumps were obtained and the rings were counted by volunteers before the event in order to obtain the most accurate count possible. The largest log was from a Black Locust tree, donated by Bob Mulvihill and having a ring count of 55 years. The Medium log from a Mulberry tree had a total of 53 years and the smallest from an apple tree had a total of 27 years, both of these were donated by Paul Beck. Each participant needed to guess the ring count within five. Winners were promised their names on our website.

The 2014 Tree stump ring count winners are:
Small log:

1) Jason Nuttridge | 23 rings
2) Dallas McQueen | 23 rings
3) Shweta Narang | 26 rings
4) Ken Hopkins | 25 rings
5) Jodyn Davis | 25 rings
6) Julia Fiedor | within five rings

Medium Log:
7) Karen Renk 53 rings exacting guess without counting any rings!

Large Log:
8) Mya Quarles 57 rings

Congratulations to each Ring count winner for their great counting efforts and thanks again to all who visited us at our booth on Community Day. Special thanks to all representing the Arboretum who participated in the Community Day Parade, Brea Lasagna and her friend in her shiny white Volkswagen Beetle convertible sporting Pleasant Hills Arboretum signs and Norma Wright (in the Garden Club vehicle).
