Arboretum Receives Tree Vitalize Grant; Volunteers needed to Plant!

The Pleasant Hills Arboretum Board is happy to report the award of a grant for eighteen trees for this fall planting season. The trees to be planted would add to our tree diversity and provide visual and educational interest to visitors to the Arboretum. The new trees include Ginkgo, Bald Cypress, Paw Paw, Serbian Spruce, American Hornbeam, Osage Orange, Ohio Buckeye, Yellow Buckeye, Catalpa, American Sweetgum, Kentucky Coffee tree, American Beech, and White pine.

 

Volunteers are needed to help with the planting of the trees, which will take place on November 15, 2014 between 9am and 12pm. Tools and mulch will be provided by the Tree Vitalize Organization. Coffee and pastries will be provided by the Arboretum Board before the tree planting. After the planting, Pizza will be available to volunteers in appreciation for their help. OPEN SITE planting preparation includes:

  • Identifying utility conflicts through the PA One Call System in advance of the excavation of the site. Planting site locations will be marked by white paint (dot) and/or flagging.
  • Excavating a tree pit that is 48" in diameter and 24" in depth. A pit may not be smaller or larger than this unless otherwise indicated by WPC staff. The borough is responsible for removing ANY material from the designated planting location including rock, brick, roots, or other unwanted material.
  • Properly disposing of the excavated material.
  • Backfilling pit level with the existing grade with topsoil.
